  • Contributions Committed to Trust Funds $5 million

The Rockefeller Foundation is a private foundation established in 1913 to promote humanity’s well-being; catalyze and scale up transformative innovations; and create partnerships across different sectors, including energy, health, food security, and smart cities. The Rockefeller Foundation collaborates with ADB on a systems-centered approach that supports the integration of climate change into city planning as a central element and links it to the implementation of infrastructure and institutional interventions.

During the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26), the Rockefeller Foundation launched the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP) to promote universal energy access and meet critical climate goals. ADB and GEAPP later established the GEAPP Energy Access and Transition Trust Fund in June 2023. The trust fund will address energy poverty and support energy transition activities in Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Pakistan, and Viet Nam.

In October 2021, ADB and the Rockefeller Foundation signed the Memorandum of Understanding on Energy Partnership to support clean energy, renewable energy, and energy-efficient projects in Asia and the Pacific. The foundation also contributed $5 million to the Urban Climate Change Resilience Trust Fund.

      Water-Sensitive Development for Slum Communities

ADB’s Revitalization of Informal Settlements and their Environments (RISE) program, financed by the Urban Climate Change Resilience Trust Fund under the Urban Financing Partnership Facility, supported the piloting of a nature-based, water-sensitive approach and technology. RISE is an action research program working at the intersections of health, environment, water, and sanitation. It resulted in community-designed water-sensitive infrastructure, including local sanitation systems, wetlands and biofiltration gardens, storm water harvesting, and paved footpaths.
