The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) was established in 2000 by Bill and Melinda Gates to enhance health care, reduce extreme poverty, and expand educational opportunities and access to information technology worldwide. The foundation supports all countries in health care, education, and poverty alleviation.
Highlights
Trust Fund. In October 2023, the BMGF committed a replenishment of $8 million to the Sanitation Financing Partnership Trust Fund, bringing its total committed contribution to $27 million. This new funding will help advance ADB’s focus on addressing climate resilience in sanitation infrastructure and services while assisting to make these services affordable, safe, inclusive, and effective.
Knowledge. In November 2023, ADB hosted financing donors for the annual consultation meetings of the Clean Energy, Urban, and Water Financing Partnership Facilities (FPFs) in India. ADB thanked the donors, including the BMGF, while highlighting the FPFs’ role in developing innovative solutions. Donors expressed their support for the FPFs, underscoring the importance of scaling up knowledge and innovation, ensuring greater visibility for donor contributions, and diversifying the funding base for FPFs.
In November 2023, ADB’s People’s Republic of China Resident Mission received a delegation from the BMGF. Both sides shared strategic priorities and operational focus at institutional and country levels and exchanged views on strengthening collaboration in agricultural development, climate adaptation, and climate financing in the future.

ADB Approves $270 Million for Madhya Pradesh Urban Services Improvement Project
ADB approved a $270 million loan for the construction of water supply and integrated storm water and sewage management infrastructure in Madhya Pradesh, India. The loan will expand the outcome of the Madhya Pradesh Urban Services Improvement Project, approved in 2017, by benefiting an additional 185,000 households, consisting of about 1.3 million people.
